About this Episode

What will your children remember most about their homeschool years?

Zan Tyler and veteran homeschool mom Jan Smith look back on the years of teaching, training, and growing alongside their children and share what they’ve learned about what matters most. They talk about recognizing each child’s gifts, making room for character training, building strong relationships, and refusing to let insecurity steal the joy of the journey. Along the way, Zan and Jan offer the kind of perspective that can help you approach this homeschool year with greater peace and confidence.

Trust that God has equipped you for the children He’s given you, and keep investing in what lasts.

Meet My Guest

Jan Smith loves God’s Word and has a deep passion for encouraging women in their faith, marriages, and motherhood. Drawing from 46 years of marriage, motherhood, homeschooling, and ministry, she shares how the Lord has met and sustained her through every season. As a speaker and Bible teacher, Jan especially loves helping women find joy and confidence in their unique calling as wives, mothers, and, most importantly, followers of Jesus.

Jan and her husband, Roger, homeschooled their four children from beginning to end. Over the years, Jan has served in leadership roles with 4-H, Boy Scouts, homeschool speech and debate, and other organizations, and she has mentored and taught Bible studies in both her church and community. She has also led a Becoming Mom Strong Bible study for young women and plays keyboard with her church’s praise band.

Jan and Roger served on the Homeschool Louisiana Board for 20 years. Since 2019, they have also served on the board of the National Alliance of Christian Home Education Leadership. Jan speaks at homeschool conventions, women’s events, marriage retreats, and leadership gatherings, bringing practical wisdom, biblical encouragement, and the perspective of a veteran homeschool mom now watching the fruit of those years unfold.

Now an empty nester, Jan continues to open her home and her life to others, viewing hospitality, encouragement, and discipleship as an important part of her ministry.

At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
