About this Episode
Have you ever wondered how homeschooling friendships can transform lives and educational journeys? Zan sits down with Callie Chaplow, mom of four and homeschool advocate, to explore the power of community in homeschooling. Callie shares her inspiring story of how she and her best friend Michelle supported each other through their homeschooling adventures, from teaching each other’s children to providing emotional support during challenging times. Zan and Callie discuss the importance of finding your “homeschool people,” the joys and challenges of homeschooling as a single parent, and the current landscape of homeschool legislation in Virginia (and how legislative trends can affect all of us). Listeners will come away inspired to build meaningful connections within their homeschool community, and be reminded of God’s faithfulness throughout their educational journey.
Meet My Guest
Callie Chaplow is a single homeschool mom of four sons and the Director of Government Affairs for HEAV (Home Educators Association of Virginia). Callie grew up in a civic-minded home talking politics and world affairs at the dinner table. She began her career in Virginia policy and politics in 2001 as then-Delegate Dick Black’s Legislative Aide and eventually Chief of Staff, also working in this capacity in the Senate. Working in the Virginia General Assembly, Callie managed legislative initiatives advancing homeschooling in Virginia while making every effort to quash efforts to strip parental rights. She enjoyed addressing HEAV families on Senator Black’s behalf, attending HEAV’s annual convention, creating certificates for homeschooled children, leading homeschool civic activities, and much more. During her homeschool journey, Callie was blessed with the flexibility to work in countless capacities both in the political and homeschool spheres. Callie has consulted in Campaign Finance Disclosure and Compliance for candidates and PACs, managed campaigns, done paralegal work, tutored with Classical Conversations Communities, taught IEW and other classes to homeschool students, led field trips, and been Chief of Staff to a Loudoun County Supervisor, who now serves in the Virginia General Assembly, Delegate Geary Higgins. Callie has also served as a speech and debate judge and was featured in Kirk Cameron’s documentary “Homeschool Awakening.” Over the years, Callie’s family has seen many changes and challenges as we all do on this side of Heaven. Her favorite verse in scripture is Romans 8:28: “In all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, those called according to His purpose.”

At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
