About this Episode

As a doctor, Roger Smith values education, however the ability for parents to nurture strong relationships with their children is the aspect of homeschooling that he values most. These relationships help build trust and avoid resentment and rebellion later on. Also, teaching children real life skills like how to start a business, how to fix things, and how to resolve conflict are benefits of homeschooling that aren’t always apparent to people on the outside looking in.

Meet My Guest

Roger Smith and his wife Jan hail from Louisiana where Roger is a medical doctor and Jan manages their horse farm and businesses. All four of their adult children were homeschooled until the college years, and home education has been an exciting journey for them where they became experts in home and family management, leadership, and community service. They continue to serve in their church as mentors and teachers, as well as serving on the board of their state homeschool organization.  Dr. Smith has a weekly video blog on parenting (Parenting Matters Now).

At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
