In this week’s episode, Zan sits down with Michelle Shaw, a homeschooling mom with a wealth of experience and insight. Michelle shares her fascinating journey: moving to the United States from Jamaica, attending Harvard Law School, meeting her husband, and embarking on the homeschooling adventure with her five children. She candidly discusses the joys and challenges of homeschooling, the importance of family time, the decision to leave her career to focus on her children, and the impact of community involvement in her homeschooling journey. Michelle’s goal is to help make homeschooling a viable option for all families. You don’t want to miss this inspiring story.

Meet My Guest

Michelle Shaw is the director of Eastside Academic Studies (a hybrid school) and the Northeast Independent Preparatory Academy (a homeschool accrediting organization). She was also the director of the DeKalb Christian Home Educators support group for 10 years. She received her B.A. in Economics from Harvard College in 1985 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1989. Michelle practiced law for six years before she and her husband, Dr. Alan Shaw, chose to focus on homeschooling their five children. Their three boys graduated from MIT, Dartmouth, and Harvard. Their girls are currently attending Georgia State University and Kennesaw State University where Dr. Shaw is a tenured professor in Computer Science. Dr. Shaw is also the pastor of Christ First Community Church in Stone Mountain, GA.  Michelle serves as the administrator for the church and she also serves on the boards of the Hugs & Hope Food Pantry, the Community Dreams Alliance, and the DeKalb Christian Home Educators. Her goal is to help make homeschooling a viable option for all families.

At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
