About this Episode

What if focusing on your child’s potential matters more than your own limitations? Karim Morato once thought homeschooling was “completely crazy” – especially for a first-generation immigrant teaching in her second language. Now this passionate advocate helps Hispanic families embrace home education across cultural and language barriers. Zan and Karim share stories of building trust through personal connections and supporting bilingual families. Their friendship and shared mission shine through as they prepare to encourage Puerto Rico’s growing homeschool community.

Meet My Guest

Karim Morato supports homeschooling parents by serving in HSLDA’s educational resources department. In addition, she reaches out to and collaborates with both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking leaders who are advancing the homeschooling movement. Karim is originally from Guatemala and emigrated to the United States in 1992. Karim and her husband have been homeschooling their three children for the last 17 years. Their oldest daughter graduated from high school in 2020 and is currently studying industrial engineering. Their son also graduated from high school at home and is pursuing a business degree.

Besides her homeschooling experience, Karim is a certified Spanish teacher with 16 years of teaching experience in public schools. In 2014, she founded Spanish Educational Solutions with the mission to support homeschool parents, parents who only speak English, and families who want to educate bilingual children. Karim holds her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, earned at George Mason University in Virginia.

For almost 30 years, she has been teaching and serving the Hispanic community through educational advice, mentoring, and counseling. One of her passions is to equip parents to lead their children’s education and advocate for what is best for them. She is convinced that homeschooling can bridge the academic gaps that sometimes exist in the Hispanic community. At HSLDA, Karim dedicates her time to upholding Hispanic leaders who support homeschooling and Hispanic parents who wish to educate at home. Through her outreach work she offers leaders strategic advice and networking to help them reach and serve the Hispanic community nationally and internationally. She also participates in conferences and offers workshops nationally and internationally, sharing her knowledge, experience, and resources. She aims to encourage parents to continue their homeschooling journey and enjoy their children.

At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
