Enjoy the Video

About this Episode

Dr. Robert Jackson, father of nine, believes that homeschooling is a calling, and we must be prepared to persevere in that calling. Robert and his wife have walked through raising two special needs children who have had very serious illnesses and two children who walked away from their faith for a period of time while they were in the midst of their homeschooling journey. Zan and Robert discuss the essential aspect of commitment – that you can’t give up on your calling, you can’t give up on your children, and you can’t give up on each other. This episode is packed with inspiration and practical wisdom, highlighting the long-term benefits and spiritual significance of home education.

Meet My Guest

Dr. Robert Jackson is a follower of Jesus Christ, husband of Carlotta, father of nine, grandfather of 18 (and counting), and family physician for 43 years all in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Robert grew up in Manning, SC where he grew to love medicine while watching his dad minister to his patients with compassion and competence. While at Clemson, Robert participated in Campus Crusade for Christ, helping him grow in his faith since being saved at age 11. Graduating from Clemson in 1977 and the Medical University of SC in 1981, Robert arrived in Spartanburg for his family practice residency and never left. Robert and Carlotta hoped to be medical missionaries in Thailand, but a health problem effectively ended that. Nevertheless, in addition to practicing family medicine all of these years, he has traveled to about 20 countries on foreign mission trips. Robert and Carlotta homeschooled all of their children kindergarten through high school for a total of 30 years. Dr. Jackson currently serves on the board for SCAIHS (South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools). He helped to start the Carolina Pregnancy Center as well as three other CPCs and has been an advocate for the unborn since the mid-1980s for which he received the Order of the Palmetto from Governor David Beasley. Previously a trustee at North Greenville University, Dr. Jackson has served on his denomination’s national Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission as well as South Carolina’s Christian Life and Public Affairs Committee. He serves as a choir member, deacon, and teacher at his church as well as the missions director, helping to minister to an unreached people in the far corner of eastern India. An award-winning author, Dr. Jackson has written three books based on his ministry opportunities called The Family Doctor Speaks:  The Truth About Life, The Family Doctor Speaks:  The Truth About Seed Planting, and The Family Doctor Speaks:  Turkey Tales and Bible Truths, and a fourth book, a biography about his dad, a Vietnam War hero, rural family doctor, and world changer. At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
