Homeschooling with Hope Through Loss and Grief

Enjoy the Video

About this Episode

Homeschooling is really the intersection of living, learning, and loving–and this often includes experiencing loss and grief. In part 2 of their discussion on homeschooling and homesteading, Zan and Brandee Gillham share the impact of grief on their lives, as well as the significance of grieving together as a family. Brandee shares her journey of grief through the unexpected loss of her father-in-law, followed six months later by the loss of their two-year-old son, Benjamin. Throughout this candid conversation, the empowering nature of homeschooling emerges as a recurring theme, with both Zan and Brandee realizing that loss and grief teach our children to become much more empathetic human beings. This often develops a heart to serve in our children and gives them the ability to encourage and uplift those in need within our communities.

Meet My Guest

Brandee Gillham is so thankful she left the world of teaching collegiate anatomy to become a full-time mama. The Lord called her to spend her days homeschooling her four cowpokes (with one of those precious boys already in heaven) and she encourages other by telling them that no time invested in our children will ever be wasted. Her deepest prayer is that she will raise these men to be warriors for Christ and passionate learners. Brandee and her cowboy enjoy serving as fourth generation ranchers on the family operation in Northeast Colorado raising beef cattle, quarter horses, chickens, and bees. If she is not at home teaching her children, she might be in a tractor or on a horse or delivering a baby. She doesn’t drink much coffee but can be seen with a cup of sugar as she loves to bake and serve food to others. Brandee believes in Jesus Christ, home discipleship, patriotism, agriculture, hard work, and speaking the truth with love and laughter.

At BJU Press Homeschool, we’re committed to providing children an education from a biblical worldview that is academically sound and challenges them to advance, think critically, and live like Christ. This type of education is not often possible in public schools because of the number of children taught in a classroom, a difference in worldview, and peer and societal pressure to conform. Homeschooling allows parents to instruct and disciple their children without daily fighting messages from an opposing worldview taught in the classroom. And with tuition costs and fees for private schooling or tutoring, homeschooling may be the only option for parents who are concerned for their children’s physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
